I started planning our Spring Break Camp this week. As I was working on a theme for the camp, I thought about what I could do that would be fun for the kids. Board breaking is one of the most fun aspects of Martial Arts.
I remember when I first started training, I watched as the higher ranks broke boards in preparation for their upcoming belt test or at public demonstrations and was amazed at their prowess and thought, I can’t wait to do that! When I finally achieved the minimum rank to be allowed to break, I thought, this is going to be easy because I’ve been doing everything the right way for a long time, I’ve won many trophies and passed all of my testings. As a result, I struggled with board breaking because I underestimated the accuracy, speed and penetration needed to excel. I failed to practice as much as I should throughout the cycle and didn’t break my boards at testing. During the next 8 weeks I broke boards on a daily basis and honed my skills to the point it became easy. To this day, I see the results of that practice. I am glad I put in the time and effort to make it happen. Martial artists break boards for several reasons, most of which are practical for self defense training. First, no one likes to be hit with the full force of an accurate, technically correct hand strike or kick, as it can cause severe injury to the participants, so boards are used instead. Your sparring partner will be thankful that you perform that technique on the board instead of them! Additionally, it's a great way to see the amazing power that can be generated by correct technique. There’s not much that compares to the satisfaction of hearing and feeling the board breaking under the force of your technique. You know when you hear that sound, that you have done it correctly. Also, accuracy is everything in tournament competition and especially a real self defense situation. Boards are almost impossible to break with an inaccurate technique, so, it is a great way to test your skill with full speed and full power. If it doesn’t smash, then you know you need to go back to the bag, and work on your technique a little more. There are many other benefits to breaking boards, but most of them do it simply because they can! So, that will be our theme for this year’s Spring Break Camp. We will break lots of boards and have lots fun doing it! We will have something for all ages and levels. If you are working the week of spring break, give your kids something to do where they will improve their TaeKwonDo skills, increase their self-defense ability, build their confidence and have a blast doing it! http://www.southaustintkd.com/spring-break-camp.html Do you live in South Austin? Are your kids asking to "Do Karate", "Try Martial Arts", "Kick in TaeKwonDo", or "Train in MMA"? Like most parents, you are probably concerned about the safety of these activities, and not sure where to begin in researching. The article below discusses what to look for in a Martial Arts Program and will give you some ideas of things to look for. Feel free to call or email with any questions you have after reading it. I hope that you and your child will come in for a FREE Trial Class.
10 Things to Look For in a Kids Martial Arts Program This free resource can help you discover important aspects of starting a Self Defense Program that you may never have considered. I) Safety An important aspect of a Kids Martial Arts Program is safety. From the training in class, to the practice sessions that are encouraged at home, we know the welfare of your children is of utmost importance. We realize your children are your highest priority. We want to teach them the safest way to train. Statistically, Martial Arts is one of the safest activities children can participate in. II) Beginning Stages The Kids Martial Arts program you choose must give new students a chance to try out the program. Our kids White and Yellow Belt class is specifically designed for beginner students age 6-12. In this class all students are taught basic and fundamental kicks, blocks, and punches which are an essential foundation to excel in TaeKwonDo. III) Fitness While searching for a great Martial Arts program, notice how much activity is going on in class. The kids should be learning detailed technique while having fun. You will notice at our academy, kids will be having a blast while working through drills that constantly challenge them to use muscles that may not be triggered in other activities. IV) Understanding Children Our Instructors understand that children and adults do not learn the same way. While the curriculum is similar, the approach should be different. Be aware that not all programs make this separation. We have been working with students and instructors since 1992. Over these many years of training, we have developed a system that works. V) Respect is vital in Martial Arts Training. When you visit our Academy, you will notice an atmosphere of respect in all of our staff. The instructors treat the students with respect and dignity. The students respect the instructors because they want to emulate the instructor and the higher ranking students. VI) Structured Curriculum Expect an Academy to have a curriculum that focuses on the art of TaeKwonDo while also using a modern approach. At TaeKwonDo Plus, we use a state of the art, documented curriculum while adhering to the ancient principles practiced by Martial Artists for centuries. Our curriculum is designed to be delivered in 8 week cycles with specific skill sets being the focus of each week. Promotional testings are held at the end of each cycle for students to experience the satisfaction of achieving a short term goal and for parents to enjoy watching their children progress. VII) Great Facility When you are considering registering your child for Martial Arts, notice the cleanliness, and upkeep of the facility. We ask our staff to walk through our locations periodically to ensure that things are in clean, working order. We work hard to ensure your work out is safe, fun, and clean. We realize it is a “gym”, but it doesn’t need to have a “warehouse” feel. VIII) A Friendly Atmosphere #8 on the list can make all the difference in your child’s Martial Arts Career. A friendly staff and members can keep them motivated to continually reach for more goals. Ideally, the other students should welcome them to the group. Notice how they speak to each other. Do the instructors recognize a new student? At TaeKwonDo Plus, we have chosen this career because we love what we do and we believe it can positively impact our society. When you come in for a Trial Class, you will see many smiles. IX) Knowledgeable Instructors The Instructors you trust your child to spend hours per week with should be well trained. They should attend classes throughout the year that help them to stay fresh on the curriculum and techniques they are teaching. They should be educated in not only how to do martial arts, but also in how to teach and motivate students of all ages and ability levels. Our Instructors are monitored regularly to ensure they are knowledgeable, professional, safe, and motivating. X) Fun! If kids are going to stick with anything, it has to be fun. We’ve been working with children in martial arts for over 20 years. In that span of time, we’ve developed multiple drills and activities that help kids learn, while staying focused and having fun. From our Tiger Cubs Program for 4 & 5 year olds, to our Youth all the way through our Adult program, we keep the students moving and learning. You will see them smiling and having a blast while developing life skills and physical techniques that will help them in every aspect of their lives. In fact, you will see many adults in our program who started out as children. If you are ready to get started with a free trial class or a $39 week long starter course visit our website, send us an email, or give us a call. We’ll see you soon!
